The Reverend Johanna Marcure
Rector

Johanna comes to Zion after serving as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in North Scituate, Rhode Island. While serving in the Diocese of Rhode Island, Johanna attended and graduated from the College for Congregational Development in Rochester, New York, and served on a variety of Diocesan committees, most recently as a member of the Congregational Development Commission and as secretary of Diocesan Council.

Prior to serving in the Diocese of Rhode Island, Johanna served in the Diocese of Central New York as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Waterville and as an associate at Grace Episcopal Church in Utica.

Following her time in Waterville, Johanna served as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse where she developed The Grace Project which engaged in ministering to youth incarcerated in the Justice Center. Partnering with the Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse (ACTS) and the NAACP she and her husband, Rabbi Joe Murray, were instrumental in bringing about an end to the use of solitary confinement of youth in the Syracuse prison system.

In addition to serving in the Diocese of Central New York, Johanna served as a resident Chaplain at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, and as a supply priest at Trinity Episcopal Church in Morgantown.

Raised in the Episcopal Church, Johanna is committed to fostering authentic relationships and caring well for all of God’s people. She is dedicated to serving as priest and minister and proclaiming the gospel with compassion and creativity through her actions and words. She aims to create multi-generational, collaborative, curious, kind, caring, and joyful faith communities that actively engage and share in ministry with integrity beyond the walls of the church.

Johanna enjoys cooking, gluten-free baking, knitting, and playing the recorder. She also runs, but only because she enjoys spending time with her husband! She is passionate about both nourishing and expressing her spirituality through the creation of mix-media art, and she loves – and wears – cowboy boots.

Alex Kunu
Director of Music Ministries

It's an honor and a privilege to serve as Director of Music Ministries at Zion.

Growing up in Luray, VA and after graduating from Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music (Shenandoah University), I went on to study music in New York City and then Cleveland, OH where my wife, Toshiko, whom I met while at Shenandoah, and I settled down for many years and became parents of two awesome boys, Takashi and Hiroki. Afterwards we moved to Japan to let the boys get to know their grandparents over there and, as one thing lead to another, time flew by and after a dozen years I decided to finally return during the Covid crisis.

My family is a bit "scattered" around the globe at the moment with Takashi in university in OH, Hiroki in university in Australia, and Toshiko remaining in Japan for the time being. Thankfully our family's love and bond is intact. I also have loving family here in WV/VA with my brothers, nephews, a niece, and my mother all nearby.

Eric Ott
Parish Administrator

I have lived right here in Charles town all my life and I graduated high school back in 2017. I have worked a couple of different jobs before coming here. I worked at everyone’s favorite store Wally world (Walmart) in the meat department. The next place I worked at was the tractor supply distribution center in Hagerstown and then back to Walmart. In my free time I like to read and play video games. I enjoy being the parish administrator because it allows me to get to know the community better and the outreach programs that Jefferson County has to offer. Being the Parish Administrator has also given me experience that I have not had before. I am in the office Monday through Thursday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, stop by for a visit.
